Providence @ St. John’s
Current Records: Providence 18-2; St. John’s 11-8
What to Know
After two games on the road, the St. John’s Red Storm are heading back home. St. John’s and the #15 Providence Friars will face off in a Big East battle at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm are out to stop an eight-game streak of losses at home.
The matchup between St. John’s and the Villanova Wildcats this past Saturday was not a total blowout, but with St. John’s falling 73-62 on the road, it was darn close to turning into one. The top scorer for St. John’s was guard Montez Mathis (14 points).
Meanwhile, it was a close one, but on Sunday Providence sidestepped the Marquette Golden Eagles for a 65-63 win. The Friars relied on the efforts of forward Justin Minaya, who had 14 points along with six boards, and center Nate Watson, who had 17 points in addition to six rebounds. Watson’s performance made up for a slower contest against the Xavier Musketeers last week.
The Red Storm are the favorite in this one, with an expected 3.5-point margin of victory. Their home court has been no bettor’s paradise, though, as they’ve failed to beat the spread in nine of their 13 home games.
St. John’s is now 11-8 while Providence sits at 18-2. A pair of stats to keep an eye on: St. John’s ranks 13th in college basketball when it comes to takeaways, with 17.6 on average. On the other end of the spectrum, Providence is 24th worst in college basketball in takeaways, with only 10.8 on average. So the cards are definitely stacked against the Friars.
