The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee unveiled its in-the-moment top 16 seeds Saturday morning on CBS. It was hard not to notice that they were the exact same teams that found themselves in the top 16 of Saturday morning’s Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings here on CBS Sports, which should serve as a reminder that I try to rank teams each morning with body of work being the most important factor.
Do other things matter?
Of course, like injuries, recent play, computer numbers and various additional factors — all play a role.
I typically attempt to prioritize body of work more than anything else in these rankings, which is why Auburn remains in the top four of Sunday morning’s updated Top 25 And 1 even after its 63-62 loss at Florida. With seven Quadrant 1 wins and a 13-3 record in the first two quadrants (all three losses are to Quadrant 1 opponents), Bruce Pearl’s Tigers still have a top-four body of work. And they’re also still the favorite to win the SEC’s regular-season title.
However, Saturday’s loss — combined with Kentucky’s come-from-behind, short-handed win over Alabama — has tightened the race and made it interesting. Auburn is now 12-2 in the league with Kentucky at 11-3. Though the Tigers do have the more favorable schedule going forward, it’s fair to suggest the SEC title is now up for grabs thanks to Auburn going 2-2 in a four-game stretch heading into Wednesday’s game against an Ole Miss team that owns a win over the Florida team that just beat Auburn.
