Conference tournament brackets were updated across the country on Thursday night after seven different leagues saw teams advance in hopes of capturing an automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
The Missouri Valley, Sun Belt and West Coast Conference all got things started with first round action while the Horizon League, Ohio Valley Conference, Atlantic Sun and Patriot League all staged their quarterfinals on Thursday. Notable results from the day included a No. 12-over-No. 5 upset in the Sun Belt with Little Rock taking down South Alabama 75-71 and No. 10 seed Georgia Southern — also a five-point underdog on the betting line — winning outright 70-64 against No. 7 seed Coastal Carolina.
Outside of the action in the Sun Belt, the conference tournament results were chalky with most top seeds advancing. The semifinals in the Patriot League, Atlantic Sun, Horizon League and OVC will take place with the tournament’s top seeds in contention.
The first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament will be decided Saturday when the OVC crowns its tournament champion. The Missouri Valley Conference and Big South will follow suit on Sunday before the action really heats up next week. The single-elimination stakes of conference tournaments and the fact that the competing teams are often quite familiar with each other — meeting for the third time in many cases — creates a cauldron of emotion that produces epic moments.
